Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, is a fictional super hero created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. Spider-Man first appeared in Marvel Comic’s Amazing Fantasy #15 and remains one of Marvel’s most popular and commercially successful characters.
An orphan raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, a 15 year-old Peter Parker took on the Spider-Man moniker and a range of spider-like super powers after being bitten on the hand by a radioactive spider at a science exhibition.
Spider-Man and Peter Parker minifigures previously appeared in the 2002-2004 LEGO Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 themes which were based on the movies of the same title. This variant comes from the 2012 Marvel Super Heroes theme, and is based on Spider-Man’s appearance in the Ultimate Spider-Man (2012-) cartoon.
In terms of design, this variant is a bit of a mixed bag, despite being a reasonable representation of the cartoon version. The suit design on the front, imprinted over the standard muscular structure, is pretty cool. The head has a web print on the back which is nice. Also, the black spider logo and carefully shaped eye pads are spot on.
The use of negative space on the bottom corners of the front and back torso doesn’t work as the belt extends the full width of the torso, undermining the effect. Inherited from the cartoon, the logo on the back is a bit odd. A black outline around this logo might give it more depth and minimise the colour clash. He could also do with some red boots or knee markings to make the legs a little less blocky.
As with all the super hero characters, this figure is worth getting, simply because of the character he represents, if not for a fantastic design. I got my figure in Spider-Man’s Doc Ock Ambush but he is also available on the Bricklink for a reasonable price if you are not interested in the set.
